Four Brits, Chris Boshier, Tony Cook, Richard Buttner, and Peter Dives, took up the offer of “three days of lovely sailing” by the Dutch and travelled to Medemblik for their National Championship on 2 to 4 September and were joined by 3 Germans for a total entry of 20 boats.  The Championships was shared with the Dutch Solo class which also included British competitors.

RYC Hollandia ran the event with their legendary efficiency.  All races started on time, the marks were moved as the wind changed (which it often did) and the results were displayed by the time the sailors arrived ashore.  The Dutch sailors gave a very warm welcome to all their visitors.

The forecast for the Championship was not good – 6 knots on Friday, 5 on Saturday but a bit more for Sunday, however, it turned out better than that and sunny and warm.  At the prize giving we were told that it was probably the best summer weekend this year in the Netherlands!

Three closely contested races were held on Friday on a windward leeward course in a southerly wind that never rose above 10 knots.  Winfred Westerman was best on the day scoring 1, 2, and 7 and won the day prize.

The wind was lighter on Saturday.  In the first race Peter and Chris rounded the first mark in first and second and reversed these positions by the end of the long run.  Chris went on to finish third, followed by Tony in fourth, their best results of the Championship, while Peter sailed himself down to tenth, not being helped by the mainsheet coming out of the cleat whilst trapezing high.  The second race was held in the lightest wind of the championship which eventually switched off completely resulting in 40% of the fleet failing to finish within the time limit.  Just when it seemed that there would be no more racing the best breeze of the day sprung up and the third race was sailed.  Rene Heynen won the day prize scoring 1, 2, and 1 which also moved him to first overall.

On the final day there was slightly more wind.  Jan van Wiggen scored 1, 4, 3 to win the day prize which moved him up from ninth overall to fifth but Rene Heynen maintained his overall lead to win Championship from Paul Verhallen in second and Winfred Westerman in third overall.  Chris was best of the Brits (8) followed by Peter (9), Richard (11) and Tony (12)

The Prize Giving was held promptly after sailing (take my advice, don’t win a prize in the Solo Class) and so, after keeping the tradition of throwing the new champions into the water, and a tasty pasta meal everyone went on their way at the end of one of the most efficiently run and friendly championships that you could wish for.
