Like all fast boats the Contender is relatively easy to gybe even in strong winds. You must take charge and drive the boat through the gybe. It was once described to me as "you have to gybe it properly", i.e. dead run to dead run. If you throw it round Laser style and try to lump a bit of weight on the new windward side it will just laugh at you.

Get the boat traveling at maximum speed, as the apparent wind speed is less then. Bear away, and as the boat starts to run by the lee grab the mainsheet and pull. As the boom comes across get your head down (you did remember to unhook didn't you?) Move to the other side and countersteer, hook on, and go for the next mark.

It's a lot easier than we sometimes make it look!
