Final Race report

Race 8 was the only race scheduled for the last day and promised to be a showdown between Stuart Jones and Ben McGrane. Although Stuart had a one pont lead, better discards meant Ben had only to stop him coming in the top four to take the championship.

Unfortunately the 'Torbay Doctor' failed to materialise yet again and a long delay ensued before a feeble sea breeze lured the race officer affloat to try a start before the two o'clock deadline.

With twenty minutes to go and six knots registering on the committee boat a black flag start was initiated.

With so little wind, Stuart's tactics of hiding from Ben behind the committee boat seemed to work for a while but eventually he had to make his bid to start and Ben managed to get underneath him and slow him down enough to force a tack into dirty air and the middle of the fleet.

With the wind now barely four knots Ben led at the first mark with Mike Murley and Matt Aston just behind. Stuart was now well back and the fading breeze provided no opportunity to make up so many places.

The race was shortened at the end of the run to give the ultra consistent Ben McGrane a well deserved second Nationals win.

Martin Frary finished a great week with a fith to take third overall behind Stuart.
