Eastbourne Sovereign Sailing Club hosted round 8 of the Contender travellers' series on 16th and 17th June.

With an onshore break and winds gusting to Force 7, the race officer eventually decided to abandon racing for the day allowing competitors to explore the delights of Brighton Lanes.

Sunday morning dawned to a more manageable 4 to 5.

Tony Cook (696) was fastest out of the blocks and led at the windward mark closely followed by Chris Boshier (694) who sped down the first reach to take the lead by the gybe mark. He was never caught in spite of a dodgy tack up the third beat. Peters Dives (2505) and Hayward (703) were 2nd and 3rd.

Race 2 saw the local Peters head off to the pin but while Peter Dives had a clean start, Peter Hayward decided to wash his sail. Chris Boshier was first to the windward mark, disappeared in a cloud of spray and chased by the rest of the fleet headed by Peter Dives.

The wind now eased slightly and in race 3, Chris Boshier lead at the windward mark with the local Peters and local Colin Gates (704) in hot pursuit. On the second broader reach, Peter Dives found a bigger wave to get past Chris Boshier and held onto the finish. Colin Gates found the attentions of Rodger White (712) too much and succumbed to washing his sail by the windward mark.

Race 4 saw the Peters Dives and Hayward head right while Chris Boshier and Tony Cook went left and inshore. Right paid and in the less strong wind Peter Dives was very quick down the second reach never to be caught. Peter Hayward held off the challenge from Chris Boshier in spite of the extreme pumping.

The overall result saw Peter Dives win the event, Chris Boshier second and Peter Hayward third. Thanks go to Eastbourne Sailing Club for running the event and their hospitality.
