Teign Corinthian Yacht Club

50 sun-kissed Contenderers compete for the 2006 Magic Marine & Craftinsure.com Contender Nationals between 3-6 June

Stuart Jones held off credible challenges from Gary Langdown and Graham Scott to take his 4th National Championship, despite not winning a race.
Gary led after day 1but the faultless consistency of Jones took its toll, as he scored no worse than 6th from the 5 races sailed.

Gary's 2 races wins were still not enough to prevent him claiming his second 'Bridesmaids' position after Stuart delivered the same medicine in 2004.

Thanks must go to Teign Corinthian YC for their patience and hard work to even squeeze the 5 races we had into the frustratingly light winds dominated event. With only marginal trapezing possible, huge loses and gains on the snakes and ladders Olympic course were inevitable.

The gloriously sunny weather may have prevented limited yacht racing but did allow for much 'off-the-water' boat tuning and tips to be disseminated throughout the fleet via our 'buddies' partnering - this was very well received by the newcommers to the fleet

Saturday 3/6/06

Race 1
The Race started in a fresh force 2, with a equal spread of boats on the line and a clean start.  First to the windward mark was Gary Langdown followed by Mike Murley, with a large bunch of boats close behind.  After the first lap Langdown maintained his lead with Stuart Jones and Graham Scott fighting it out for second place.  By the last leg Ben Holden had moved to fourth behind Langdown, Jones and Murley.  At the finish Langdown took the gun, Jones was second and Holden third.  The highlight of the race was Dave David losing 30 places on the last beat to finish last!

Race 2

After 2 general recalls, the black flag put in an appearance with Scott having a port flyer.  At the windward mark Scott was first with Stacey Bray second and Langdown third.  With the wind dying as the race progressed, the beat was hard to sail.  At the finish it was Scott who took the gun with Jones stealing second from Langdown, with Bray fourth.  The rest of the fleet drifted over the line.

Sunday 4/6

No wind - No racing.

Monday 5/6

Race 3

After one days delay race 3 was sailed in a light northeasterly.  The committee boat end fo the line paid and Keith Paul led a select few hard right out to sea.  The remainder of the fleet chose the shifty winds and reduced tide close to shore.  Paul was first to the windward mark closely followed by Allan Orton, Stuart Jones and peter Dives.  There was some place changing on the first reach with Chris Howe climbing to 5th place.

The second reach was marked by Stuart Jones going low, losing out the Peter Dives, with Allan Orton inspecting the bottom of his boat.

On rounding the leeward mark Paul and Dives again headed out to sea, but Jones and Howe opted to stick to the right hand side of the course and play the shifts. The run was sailed in a dying breeze which was swinging more southerly, and so the last beat required a short hike before heading for the line.  Keith Paul got the gun, closely followed by Dives and Jones.

Tuesday 6/6

Race Four

The forecast was for sun with a force 3 to 4 gradient wind with the possibility of a sea breeze. The course was laid to take account of the oscillating breeze.

After the start, Matt Aston worked the shifts in the middle of the course to lead at the top mark and stay infront for the first lap. Gary Langdown went to the left and Keith Paul to the right. Matt Aston looked as though he had an unassailable lead but Gary and Keith came from opposite sides of the course and rounded the second windward mark within seconds of Matt. Graham Scott and Peter Dives were close behind them.

The run was slow with Gary Langdown just getting round the bottom mark first from Matt. Tim Holden took a more inshore route making up a lot of time to round fourth.

The final beat saw Gary Langdown in the lead with Tim Holden second, Graham Scott Third and Keith Paul Fourth.

Matt Aston, along with many others, misjudged the ride in the light wind and hit mark losing five places.

Race 5

The race was in even lighter and more fickle wind than race 4.

Simon Mussell showed his speed and skill by leading from the start and was never caught. Martin Metcalfe rounded the windward mark second but was overtaken by Graham Scott. With the exception of Stuart Jones, who worked his way up to fourth, the rest of the fleet were left behind in the dying wind and were glad to finish.

Overall results:
1st Stuart Jones, 2nd Gary Langdown, 3rd Graham Scott, 4th Keith Paul, 5th Peter Dives, 6th Allan Orton, 7th Matt Aston, 8th Simon Mussell, 9th Richard Gimmler, 10th Gareth Humphrey
